Here's the real one...
Notice how the inside of the door slopes downward and outward and there's an angled lip of trim that separates "inside" from outside. That was all part of packaging the original car as compactly as possible.
When I was first looking at these trying to figure out how to build them out of flat 2 dimensional styrene, I originally thought the whole door frame tucked in like that, but of course it doesn't. It's just that bit of wraparound trim. So here's my "almost there" version of that.
I still need to trim off the one on the right as we see it here. And sand and sand and sand to get it all smooth and round off the square edge to be more realistic, but I think it looks ok. What do you think?
I still need to add the door strikers and once again I am going to use powerful neodymium magnets! I will make an approximation of the striker you see in the top photo for each door post and glue a magnet inside it. Then I will make the partner part of the striker that goes on the trailing edge of the door and glue a magnet inside that. I need to make sure the doors close naturally and that the magnets will also hold them up, so the doors don't sag. If any of you have a better idea, I'd love to hear it.
