I a real dumbass sometimes. I got my shiny new louvre set with the new design from Colin just in time for my birthday yesterday. And if you’ve been following this series you’ll know I glued tiny “shelves” into the openings I had cut out for the last set. So of course, I needed to cut those out and sand them smooth.
Anyway I got a little boisterous with the 150 grit sanding stick in the left side opening. When the dust (literally) settled I had opened it by a smidge over 40 thou or 1.12 mm for the rest of the world.
Eek!

I originally thought I could just add some filler, but I have every Evergreen sheet known to mankind, so I poked a few bits of scrap into the gap to see if they would fit. And the 40 thou sheet did, so I cut a tiny strip and glued it in. And it worked!
I may be guilty of gilding the lily, or maybe just fussy, but I realized on Saturday that I needed to move the louvre on the right forward by a tiny smidge (less than 1mm) so the vents would line up on both sides.
I did that the same way as the above. I needed to make the opening longer but the same amount and that meant I also needed to take a hair off the edges of the front half of the right louvre to get it to blend perfectly with the surface.
Anyway, it’s done and will look great.
Nice save Chris! Looks great!
BTW this isn’t even close to being ready to paint. I have a ton of surface prep to do before that. I use a variety of sanding products ranging from 600-12,000 grit and polishing with a cotton brush on a Dremel. I admit I am a little obsessive.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!😁
That looks like a great fit. Thanks for the suggestion on the mounting lip mate! They also look like they are conforming nicely to the curves of the bonnet.
With me never getting to build a full model, let alone playing around with fillers and styrene, a quick question about the styrene strip v's filler / putty.
Would filler not be a good idea on a gap that size? Would it crack, be hard to fill / bond etc without some kind of under-form work? Or, was the styrene strip just an easier / quicker solution and in the process uses less filler?
